It’s my opinion, AND I tell everyone I come in contact with, that Trex decking saved my entire home from becoming a total loss
On May 28th, 2009, a full 20 lb. propane tank ignited on my deck.
Almost immediately, my house and my next door neighbor’s house became engulfed in an intense fire. Ultimately, it took 7-8 fire trucks to suppress the blaze in our two homes. It’s my opinion, AND I tell everyone I come in contact with, that Trex decking saved my entire home from becoming a total loss.
The day following the fire, I returned home to inspect the damage. I was shocked by the devastation of the fire. It had destroyed an entire corner of my house; from the main floor (where the deck was attached) all the way to the 2nd floor. It also completely gutted the roof of our house and severely smoked damaged our entire home. In the words of one fireman who put out the flames “it was a very difficult and very, very hot fire.”
Despite the near total loss of our home, I was more shocked by how much of the house was still standing. From local news helicopter videos, you can clearly see the fire erupting along the entire length of our roof.
I fully expected a TOTAL loss of all contents and structure within the house. Other than the corner where the fire had started, the rest of our home was more or less intact. Thankfully, from the remains, we were able to recover nearly all of our personal affects, pictures, etc.
I was puzzled how the entire house had survived such a blaze. Once I walked towards the back of the house, where the deck was, the reason had become quite apparent. The Trex decking used to construct my entire deck (decking, posts and rails) completely withstood the intense fire.
I was astonished to find the propane tank and BBQ, where the fire had originated, still standing where it had been the day before. The Trex decking was still structurally strong. The BBQ weighed over 300 lbs! I walked on charred Trex decking, yet by the solid feeling beneath me, you would hardly know they were fire damaged!
Even more astonishing was, while the metal balusters along the railing had melted, the Trex rails were still standing. (I’m talking about the rails that were taking the full brunt of the flames shooting out of the propane tank!) The rails were charred, yet still seemed strong.
I have no doubt in my mind, had my wife and I decided to use wood decking in the construction of our deck instead of Trex, the aftermath would have been entirely different. The fire would have ignited along the entire span of our deck (40 feet along the back of our house) and brought the entire house down.
In the next few months, my family will begin rebuilding our house and deck. You better believe we’re going to replace the deck with Trex decking!!!
Thank you to everyone at Trex for making such a beautiful, strong and most importantly SAFE product!
Sincerely,
James
